Leading European car magazines, such as Autobild, Autoexpress and Autocar were in contact with a representative from Kia and found out that the automaker’s interested in making more hot hatches after the cee’d GT and pro_cee’d GT (review), but only of demand warrants it.
There is no real profit to be made in these hot hatchback types of models, but the boost to the brand image is the big payoff.
You would have to think that the Rio hatchback would be the next logical choice for a GT model, especially since there has long been talk of a tuning treatment.
The suspension of the Rio was given a deliberately sporty touch, adding more fuel to the fire that a GT version may be in the offing.
Kia Rio GT Engine, Release Date
Even if the Kia Rio does become the next GT model, don’t expect to see it until 2015, when the car should receive a mid-life refresh.
One thing that is known is that the 120 hp 1,0L or the 130+ hp 1,2L turbo engines being planned won’t be suitable for a GT model. They lack the power and performance needed to appear in a GT hot hatch.
It is much more likely that they would go with the big 1,6L turbo engine with 180 horsepower so that it wouldn’t better the performance of the 204 hp cee’d GT engine.
When it comes to performance, it should make the 0-100 km/h sprint in a touch over 7 seconds.
Rio GT Rendered
Upon hearing the rumors of a Rio GT, Theophilus Chin decided to render a cool looking version of what the model might look like.
His version is a sleeker, sexier 3-door variant, complete with two-tone alloy wheels, a new LED daytime running light cluster, a new front air intake and black accents.
The side sills were also enlarged to give it that sporty look.
In Britain the pro_cee’d GT is a touch more expensive than the Clio RS, so expect a lot from the well equipped, affordably priced Kia Rio GT.
