Kia Motors Earnings Soar Nearly 12% During The First Quarter of 2014

Kia Motors Corporation has announced an improvement in their business during the first quarter of 2014.

The news is surprising when the state of trading in the domestic market and the strength of the Korean Won-US Dollar exchange rate.

Global sales climbed 5.2% in Q1, with more than 687,000 units sold.

Sales in China climbed 13.3% to 156,000 units, while sales in Europe reached 89,000 units, for a 7.9% increase.

Sales in the US hit 133,000 units for a 4.8% increase, while the rest of the world delivered a 1.8% increase and 201,000 units sold.

Kia Sportage Exterior ColorAt home, sales fell by 0.6% to 108,000 units.

What was most surprising was that despite an exchange rate that saw the US dollar drop 1.6% against the Won, Kia was still able to increase revenues by 7.6% to 11.9 trillion Won.

That meant a profit of 2.5 trillion won and 736 billion won in gross profit and operating profit, respectively.

Global Kia Sales

A big part of the reason for the Q1 success was down to an increase in RV sales across the globe.

There was about a 2% leap across the board, but the big win in this category was in the US, where sales of the Sportage and Sorento accounted for 36% of Q1 sales, compared to 29% in Q1 of 2013.

Increases were also seen in factory production, including a 9.3% increase in Korean plants to 433,000 units.

Kia’s manufacturing plants in other parts of the world combined for a 10.8% increase, for a total of 339,000 units.

Much has been written about Kia’s November 2012 sales success in the USA and Canada, but the carmaker’s achievements go much further than just in those places.

Kia’s meteoric rise continued in other parts of the world including Europe, China and Middle East with global sales in November totaling 234,069 units.

Kia Motors global sales last month are up 6,4 per-cent compared to November 2011 due in large part to strong sales of the carmaker’s 5 top-selling products.

Those include the sub-compact Rio (known also as Kia K2 in China), Cerato and Sportage with November 2012 sales of 37,651; 33,309 and 30,364 units, respectively.

Other Kia vehicles enjoyed strong growth as well, including the Optima mid-size sedan with 30,364 units sold and the just-recently updated 2014 Sorento SUV with sales of 19,107 units.

Global market sales

Successful launch of the all-new K3 compact sedan (Kia Forte 2014MY) in South Korea and China has helped Kia to achieve double-digit growth in both highly competitive markets.

Kia’s sales in Korea posted a year on year sales increase of 13.8% in Korea and 13,6% in China with sales totaling 44,400 and 55,300 units, respectively.

The North American sales jumped 11,7% for a total of 46,774 units, while the financially troubled Europe posted a modest 1% gain in sales (46,331 units sold).

According to the latest sales figures, Kia’s year-to-date-sales are up more than 10% from a year ago. So far this year, Kia Motors has sold 2,497,002 vehicles globally.
