2011 Kia Optima crash test safety rating – frontal, side and rollover impact

2011 Kia Optima Earns Five-Star Crash Safety Rating From U.S. NHTSA’s new, stricter guidelines.

It was quite a fascinating achievement for the all-new 2011 Kia Optima; as it has backed an overall five-star crash safety rating. This happened at the most recent crash tests carried out by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s NHTSA, where it emerged with five stars in each of all the classes of overall ratings.

The new 2011 Kia Optima had already been awarded the “Top safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) , as it provides customers with equipments and technologies designed with the highest order of safety.

According to the group president and CEO of Kia Motors Manufacturing, Georgia, and Kia Motors America, Byung Mo Ahn, the 2011 Optima incorporates some of  the carmaker’s most advanced safety technologies with head-turning style, performance and comfort to provide consumers with high value and peace-of-mind.

As the first Korean-built vehicle to be awarded a five-star crash safety rating under NHTSA’s new, stricter guidelines, Optima creates a new benchmark in the segment and underscores Kia’s commitment to offering consumers the highest levels of quality and safety in all of our vehicles.”

This year’s crash test was tougher, and it provided consumers with one overall safety score for each of the 24 passenger cars; two vans, nine 2011 brand pickups, and 20 sport utility vehicles that participated. The brand new testing  series also provided teeming consumers with useful information on forward collision warning systems, and lane departure. Both of which are geared toward crash avoidance, and are new and advanced technologies.

Just like other Kia line-up, the all-new 2011 Optima integrates a high level of reputable safety attributes like the six airbags, front active headrests, side-impact door beams, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners, three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).  It also incorporates Four-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), ESC, a Traction Control System (TCS), a Brake Assist System (BAS) and Hill Assist Control (HAC) that are also of high standard.

The Kia Optima 2011 model comes in three trims; LX, EX and SX. It also comes with admirable technological systems that are tailored for luxury and convenience. Present in the 2011 Optima are features like an MP3 audio system with Sirius Satellite Radio capabilities and three months complimentary service, auxiliary and USB audio input jacks and standard Bluetooth wireless technology connectivity with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls to enable hands-free operation for compatible mobile phones.

The mid-size sedan’s current engine line-up includes two efficient engines; the 2.4L GDI four-cylinder and 2.0L GDI Turbo engine.  Available in the Optima later this year will also be a 2.4L hybrid drivetrain. The price for such a trendy and performance-driven midsize sedan starts at $18.995.

  1. $18,995, sigh. The Cerato/Forte starts at AU$18,990 here in Australia. May I remind everyone the AUD and USD are worth roughly the same amount. Last time I looked the AUD was buying 101 US cents.

  2. With better safety fortification comes a price. Pay it to Kia and be safer in their well-built vehicles. Easy. Said. And done. Great midsize from Kia as they and Hyundai prepare to snub VW out of the German automaker’s ridiculous claim that they want to be the world’s No.1 automaker by the year 2012. Tee-hee, V-Dub-L-U. Funny one.

  3. built in barebecue grill, you say for kia cars “Safety greatly depends on the driver and not mostly on the car”
but driver controls the car even if your cars equped with abs, esc, after limits , there is notting to do

  4. The Volt will never have a rival, because no one will ever make a mistake as big as GMs. Don’t worry about the Volt.

  5. I heard that the Kia Ray is going to production for 2012, that would be my guess. Also maybe the KND-6 is the new Rondo. Contrary to what many of you think, the Rondo has done well globaly except for US market. That is where I would lay my money.

  6. The Volt is nothing revolutionary. The cost to own it doesn’t justify its high price tag. A Pruis uses less energy, and it doesn’t strain the coal-fed power grid when you plug it in. Unless your house is DIRECTLY fed by solar or wind, you end up using more fossil fuel! Hyundai and Kia are on a roll. Hyundai’s corporate average is amazing and way ahead of everyone else. I am not worried…at all. I don’t care if they have a dedicated hybrid or not, they obviously know what they are doing.

  7. I agree, Greg, Hyundai/Kia are nothing short of amazing lately. I am keeping an eye on the 2012 Kia Rio sedan or hatchback for potential purchase.

  8. I am worried for Hyundai/Kia because Vice Chairman Lee Hyun Soon has personally resigned from the automotive group this month in March 2011. That means that some guy named Yang woong Chul will be heading the R&D staff and direction in Namyang South Korea. Implications of the loss of Chairman Lee possibly a harbinger of a void in Hyundai/Kia leadership and vision in the powertrain division, in which Lee Hyun soon was heavily responsible for the alpha and beta versions of Hyundai’s powertrains as well has multitude of engineering precision feats that he has prodded his Namyang research team to accomplish in less than twenty years.

    feats include

usage of (Theta II) D-I engines for multitude of HKAG cars and trucks (Sonata, Elantra, Optima, Sportage.
usage of hybrid technology with the fusing or integration of Lithium LG polymer technology with Hyundai proprietary 6-speed transmission.
design and creation of engine components which allow for higher compression ratios and safer and more reliable engine lifespans. (balanced timing chains, lower resistance and friction, dual CVVT, higher exaust temperatures)
Re-engineering of Mitsubishi’s Twin Scroll turbo which includes quite a few modifications which allow for less torque steer, higher fuel economy, safer and more reliable engine durability.
The Tau V8 design (awarded a Ward’s Top 10 engines in the world)

    etcetera ecetera.

  9. Re-engineering of Mitsubishi’s Twin Scroll turbo which includes quite a few modifications which allow for less torque steer, higher fuel economy, safer and more reliable engine durability.

Fascinating, Captain. Tell me more about the Mitsu Twin-Scrolling.
