Spy Shots: Kia K5 / Optima Facelift

South Korean automobile fans were able to take a few spy shots of the slightly revised Kia K5 (known as Optima in the USA).

Snapped at a parking lot somewhere in South Korea, the K5 prototype was wearing heavy camouflage with the only visible parts being the headlamps and front signature grille.

As these early spy shots suggest, the updated Kia Optima mid-size sedan will incorporate a revised front fascia which will feature a slightly redesigned signature grille, new LED headlamps and revised front bumper.

The spy shots also indicate that there will be some subtle changes made to the Optima’s rear end, as well as its profile styling.

The updated Optima mid-size sedan is also expected to receive some interior styling tweaks and may benefit from an enhanced suspension and powertrain technology.

The 2013 is an important year for Kia as they will unveil several new models including the all-new 2014 Forte sedan, Forte 5-door hatchback and Forte Koup, and possibly the brand-new Kia Soul.

However, the Optima facelift is not expected to be released in 2013, but rather in 2014. As far as we know, Kia will begin shipping the facelifted version of the Optima to its U.S. dealerships at the beginning of 2014. [Source: Bobaedream.co.kr]

  1. Off topic: I just saw the 2013 Lexus IS. Is that the best Lexus could come up with on the exterior. The next Genesis or whatever that RWD Hyundai all spy shots is, will be ready to whip so IS a** in sells….. unless IS buyers perfer bore over real style. I don’t get it, the 1st and 2nd generation ISs were earth shattering but not this. All it is is a Acura/Sonata tail lights with Kia’s signture grille turned sideways with a stretched Audi face. That’s easy to do.

  2. I’m not done with Toyota/Lexus. Why don’t Lexus find their own nitch and leave Hyundai/Kia’s design streatgy alone. Now everytime a new Hyundai or Kia is unveiled, some Japenese car wants to copy it. Think about it. When the 2nd generation Azera was unveiled 2 years ago, how many Audi like greenhouses do we have now? Lets list: 2013 Avalon, 2013 Fusion, 2013 Sentra, 2013, Altima, 2013 Infinti M (quite stupid to change the Infinti line up if you ask me) 2013 Impala, 2013, Acura ILX (one of the worst selling luxury cars btw).

  3. The spy shots show parking sensors on the front and rear bumpers… I know we have never had those on the front in the USA. I don’t think I’ve seen them on the rear bumper in an Optima in the USA.

  4. looks much like k7/cadenza which i hope they release next week. optima suppose to be refreshed this summer as 2014 model. then all new in 2016?? how come sonata didn’t refresh last year/ anyway, i actually like current optima look. i may get blue SXL when the new one comes out depending on how it looks. i dont like those fake buick style vents on the sides. but either way strong design and family look all around from fote to k7 to k9 in 2014. its like they’re making sure you get used to the look when the mother of all kia comes out in 2014, the quoris. anyway build another damn plant.

  5. interesting LED DRL. i seriously hope they get rid of getto sxl line with that hideious chrome wheels and chrome everything. terrible idea. DRL should be exclusive to SX and that will be it. SX will be exlucsive to turbo high hp engines also. how come sorento dont get xenon HID lights when optima and even fote does???

  6. 2014 Sorento will have a HID and SXL option. The Optima in the U.S. should be getting the electronic equipment it has been missing. I know backup sensors and a more high res camera are coming. It might get the lane departure warning system the Sorento is getting also.

  7. are you sure? i looked everywhere. sorento SXL will have LED accent light not DRL and halogen lamps. they should have offered HID on SX long time ago. should also be ooffered on sportage as well. they do that overseas i dont understand why usa versions get halogen lamps, i always hated that. usa versions are always dumbed down or plain, less optiosn, etc.

  8. Don’t you find it strange that not long after this, spy shots of the next Forte hatch is now available to be viewed? Why do you think that is? I’m going to tell you. I think Kia used the Optima facelifted as a decoy to keep spiers from the next Forte hatch. However the spiers must have still noticed the sneaky 5 door. Maybe Kia has the 5 door out to keep the next Sedona away from camera as long as possible. P.S. a lot of people are disappointed about the new Lexus IS’s exterior and interior. The new IS went from original to Acura TSX. But since Lexus ain’t Korean it’s original and only the Kia K9 would gain a greater negative energy about its design.

  9. Also I’m currently on Motortrend and Autodpies defending Kia’s designs and putting everyone else to the kitchen table. As usual I’m winning. As a result, haters are beating around the bush by trying to focus on other negative things about Hyundai such as the mpg. My defense to win, bring up the Volt, Fusion hybrid and C Max. Ali’s bring up Toyota’s floor mats, Honda’s Fit being flammable and the Volt known as catching on fire too. It’s actually good for me because it keeps me fresh and aware of everyone else copying.
