Kia Optima Hybrid 2013 – What’s Changed

Kia has seen many of their models, including the Optima Hybrid, have their official EPA-rated mileage downgraded.

But that is not something that is going to happen with the 2013 version of the Optima Hybrid, though.

A number of changes have been made that now see that particular model deliver more trunk space, torque, and an increase in fuel efficiency.

There are two Optima Hybrid models available, with both receiving the same powertrain adjustments.

The result is a decrease in combined horsepower, from 206 to 199 horsepower, but an increase in torque from 195 to 235 lb-ft!

The powertrain is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, which includes a more powerful Hybrid Starter Generator and a 47 kW lithium-polymer battery.

Optima Hybrid hits 40-MPG

The Optima Hybrid base mode delivers an EPA-rated 36/40 mpg city/highway, which is an improvement over the 34/39 rated 2012 model.

The EX trim, which is fully loaded, is expected to deliver 35/39 mpg, which is identical to its mechanical twin, the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

As of yet, no pricing has been announced on the 2013 model. What is known is that the creation of a new EX trim means that certain equipment will be taken from the 2012 model’s Hybrid Premium Technology Package, which could help you come up with a likely price point.

The 2013 Kia Optima EX model will include premium features such as an eight-speaker premium sound system, a navigation system with a backup camera, panoramic sunroof, heated/ventilated front seats, and 17-inch alloy wheels. HID headlights and leather seats are also likely to be included.

On the 2012 model, the additions of those premium packages lifted the price from $26,450, for the base model, to $32,500.

Apart from the badge changes, Kia left the Optima’s stylish, coupe-like exterior design intact! So the biggest changes for the 2013 model year were done under the car’s skin!
