Kia June 2012 sales increase 14%

Hyundai and Kia both enjoyed their best June sales ever in the U.S. market. The biggest gains went to Kia, which reported a 14 percent jump in auto sales with 51,326 vehicles sold during the month of June 2012. Hyundai sales, on the other hand, rose 8 percent for a total of 63,813 units.

Kia reported its U.S.-made Optima mid-size sedan remained its number one selling vehicle last month with sales totaling 13,393 units (an 89 percent increase from the same month a year ago).

The carmaker’s record-high June 2012 sales were also highlighted by continued healthy demand for the Sorento and Soul crossover vehicles with sales of 10,826 and 10,199 units, respectively.

Sales of the Kia Forte were also strong in June, with 7,461 units sold, while sales of the new Rio 5-door and Rio 4-door sedan jumped from 1,954 units (a year ago) to 3,668 units in June 2012.

Deliveries of the Sportage CUV and Sedona MPV fell slightly compared to a year ago. The Sportage sales dropped  nearly 10 percent – from 4,377 units sold in June 2011 to 3,950 units last month, while Sedona sales fell from 2,086 units in June 2011 to 1,829 units this past month.

He went on to say that the popularity of vehicles such as Kia Soul, Sorento and Optima has dramatically raised awareness, perception of the Kia brand in the USA.

  1. Funny, Kia made a (big) Deal that its hot selling Optima are now made in the USA in Georgia. I see that a lot of them being dropped off at local Dealers are still being imported from Korea. Maybe thats a good sign that currently Kia America cannot keep up with the demand.

  2. Scott- our dealer has seen some Korean built Optimas recently that are non-hybrid. Though the majority of the Optimas (non-hybrid) we receive are USA built.

  3. I would go after Robert Downey Jr, hard, to sell the Optima. Justin bieiber for the Kia Forte…

That is where my marketing dollars would go..

  4. Jason; Check you facts! I have seen in the last month (several) 2012 or 2013 Kia Optima`s off loaded from the Car Carrier Trailers and and there were (none) Hybrid vehicles, all standard gasoline equipped, assembled in Korea and “imported” at Port of Brunswick”. Both Toyota and Honda do the same thing, even for East Coast destined delivery especially at the launch of a new model year. Location check, Phil Smith Kia, Lighthouse Point, FL near Pompano Beach.

  5. I would back up Jason’s facts as a Kia dealer in Sacramento CA. All of the Hybrids do come from Korea. The only non-hybrids that I have seen come from Korea are LX models. Everything else I have coming in are built in Georgia. Not to say that Philip is incorrect, but this is what I see on my side of the country.
