Kia May Debut Roadster Concept At The 2014 Detroit Auto Show
It seems like it’s been a while since we have heard anything about Kia’s plans to produce a Mazda MX-5 Miata fighter, but it’s back in the news again after a company executive spoke about it to Auto Express.
Kia’s vice president of overseas marketing, Soon-Nam Lee, took time to talk about the Kia GT sedan, which is expected to arrive in 2017.
He also suggested, though, that a roadster concept may make an appearance as early as the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January.
There is no guarantee that such a vehicle will ever reach production status, but there are more than a few Kia officials believe that a roadster would help advance the brand.
Paul Philpott, CEO of Kia Motors UK and Ireland, spoke to the same magazine in 2011about how a roadster could separate Kia from its sister company, Hyundai.
He felt that Kia was more about fun and youthfulness, whereas Hyundai was more focused on stylish, upmarket design.
Peter Schreyer, head of design at Kia, is also said to be interested in a roadster.
The rumored Kia roadster concept that the carmaker delivers is unlikely to look anything like the KCV-III convertible the company showed off back in 2004.
Kia’s design language has changed considerably in the years since, including the introduction of their signature “tiger nose” signature grille.
Kia GT Sedan, Cross GT SUV In The Pipeline?
There has been a lot of talk about the GT sports sedan lately. The Kia GT concept seen at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show is headed for production revealed UK’s Autoexpress magazine.
The production model is not likely to feature all the items found on the concept (suicide doors), but will adopt some styling cues.
It is also likely that Kia will launch a crossover vehicle larger than the current Sorento CUV. The model will look much like the Cross GT concept first seen at the Chicago Auto Show earlier in the year.
