Kia announces production debut of the long-awaited 1,0L T-GDI Kappa engine!

First previewed at the Geneva motor show 2 years ago, Kia’s highly-advanced turbocharged engine is now ready for the serial mass production.

The downsized 1,0L turbo three-cylinder engine will first appear under the hood of the Kia cee’d GT Line, which goes on sale across Europe in the fourth quarter of this year, while later, the unit will also be made available on a range of other Kia models.

Kia Kappa Turbo EngineDeveloped in-house by Kia’s powertrain development team at its Korean research & design centre, this state-of-the-art engine achieves 10 to 15% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the automaker’s current 1.6-litre GDI engine.

1,0L T-GDI Engine Horsepower & Torque Ratings

According to the carmaker’s official press release, the unit generates 120-horsepower and 172 Nm of torque.

The engine’s maximum 172 Nm torque is available across a wide 1,500-4,100 rpm range, with maximum power arriving at 6,000 rpm!

Kia models to use 1,0L turbo engine

As we have already mentioned, the zurbocharged 1,0L engine will first be offered in the Euro-market Ceed hatchback.

All four models, including the 5-door hatchback, Proceed “shooting brake”, Ceed SW and Xceed will be offered with it.

Kia promises that the unit will also be made available in other models, but has yet to reveal which are the vehicles to gain some turbo power.

We believe the Rio and Soul crossover vehicles are the two likely candidates, while larger Forte compact car, which shares its underpinnings with the Euro-market Ceed, could also get it.
