New Kia Ray EV, a zero-emissions city car, marks the beginning of a new era in Korean motoring!

Kia is entering the electric vehicle market by introducing the all-new Ray EV, Korea’s first-ever mass produced electric vehicle. After the official unveiling of a petrol-powered Ray mini-car, Kia has now lifted the lid on the Ray EV and its highly-advanced all-electric powertrain.

The all-new Ray EV will be built and sold exclusively in South Korea. Kia plans to produce 2.500 units in 2012 and provide all of them to the South Korean government departments and fleet buyers as a part of the carmaker’s long-term real-world research and development program.

The battery-powered Ray EV is a close relative to the 1.0L gasoline powered Kia Ray crossover vehicle, which was put on sale in South Korea in November. Apart from the powertrain technology, the two share exactly the same design layouts and dimensions.

Power for the Ray EV is provided by a 50kW electric motor which is mated to a high-capacity 16.4 kWh lithium ion polymer battery – positioned under the rear seat and cabin floor. The highly-advanced battery-pack adds 187 kg (around 412 pounds) to the overall weight of the vehicle, however, the Ray EV still manages to outperform its gasoline-powered sibling in a run from 0-100 km/h. The EV runs from 0-100 km/h in 15.9 seconds while its maximum speed is 130 km/h.

According to Kia, the Ray’s batteries can be fully re-charged in six hours using a standard 220V household supply and just 25 minutes in fast-charge mode. Kia’s latest city car has a range of up to 86 miles on a single charge!

Any word on vehicle range? Hopefully the technology in this vehicle will be helpful to Kia (and Hyundai) in developing a global EV…

The Ray and Naimo are going to be unveiled at some electronics auto show. As long as the Naimo is being unveiled in the States, I bet that increases the chance that bad boy will go into production. I really like the Naimo design. Now bring it to production. Oh yeah, I have a Acer Tablet 500. So if I get the Naimo I can put my tablet into the panel and operate it right? That Naimo is one hell of a ride one hell of a ride indeed. It better go into production. Oh yeah, my colors for the Naimo are Titanium, Black, Blue and Dark purple. I want it available in those colors. Also, I want an available rear spoiler. Plus I want panaramic sunroof. I want the engine to be so quiet that blind people want even know I’m around. Also get rid of the wood floors from the concept. I want carpet. I want the floor mats to say “Naimo”. I want push start, and I also want stop N’ Go. I don’t care if it is gasoline or electric but I would perfer electric. Last but not least, I want the Naimo fully loaded with out breaking the bank. As for the Ray. I like it too. The little thing grow on me. I just wish it was just bigger with bigger tires. I said it before and I’m going to say it again. That Naimo is one HELL OF A DESIGN ON HELL OF A DESIGN INDEED.

A new thought just came to mind. When Kia unveils the Naimo in the States, will it be the same green color or do you think they repainted it? If it was repainted I hope it is in black or dark blue or even red. It needs to be in a dark aggressive color. Not that lime green crap. I understand green means going green. But damn. use some color us americans will perfer. Black, red, blue, silver. Also if Kia shows the GT concept again, I want to see it in black. Why? Will when it is in a dark color, that chrome on the side profile will really show compared to the silver colored GT. Chrome really looks good on dark colored cars. Especially on the Optima and GT. I wonder if Kia made another car with chrome from the A pillar thorugh the C pillar. It’s a shame that wasn’t on the K9 or next Forte. Oh well. No big deal. I’m sure the K9 is going to be stylish (even though so far the photoshops don’t make it look as if it will be). I don’t think the K9 is going to have a grounbreaking exterior to tell you the truth. I think it’s just some design Kia just put togather.
