Love the dual exhausts. Hyundai seems to have dropped them on their ’10-11 models

W Wilson, you just hit on KIAs big secret. The big secret is that Optima will come in V6 version too.
    -
This thing is sweet, but will you please stop comparing this to Camry and Accord for the love of God? Go on Autoblog and look at the US patent for Next Gen Camry, and then come back to me as to why its not even a fair race with Toyota. This is more on the Level of VW CC than a Camry or Accord.

  6. HyundaiSmoke Says:

    March 16th, 2010 at 10:10 pm

Its like a Chrysler Sebring if they only did a better job.

  7. jtz Says:

I Told ya derrious. Lol. I want it in dark blue, black or titanium. F the Taurus, F the LaCross and F the Maxima. this car looks far better than many above its class. They really took the TIME in designing this bad boy. Unlike the 2010 Infinti M sedan which is nothing but the 09′ LaCross greenhouse.

So the new Optima is simply parked there in the open, alone at night, just waiting to be photographed? ;-)

Kia knows how to generate Buzz.

The interior is looking good too. The whole package almost make me regret that I don’t need anything bigger than my Forte.

  9. jtz Says:

    March 16th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

I really like how the KND-4′s face is on there without clicking and pasting. Unlike Mitsubishi that just cloned the Lancer’s face and put it on the RVR and Outlander CUVs.

  10. HyundaiSmoke Says:

    March 16th, 2010 at 10:14 pm

I thought its was going to be even a little cheaper than this. Forget KIA Optima this needs to be called the KIA Ford Fusion Spanker.

  11. jtz Says:

    March 16th, 2010 at 10:19 pm

Why is it the Peter Schyer is doing a better job designing Kias than with VWs though?

  12. HyundaiSmoke Says:

    March 16th, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Becuase VW is a corporate Megalith concrned about cuting costs in order to be #1.

  13. jtz Says:

    March 16th, 2010 at 10:24 pm

HyundaiSmoke it needs 4WD first to be the Ford Fusion Spanker. It really needs available 4WD it would make a great Subaru Lagacy rival which is nothing but an Accord when viewd from the side.

  14. HyundaiSmoke Says:

    March 16th, 2010 at 10:37 pm

Yeah jtz true, but hardly anybody buys the 4WD version of the Fusion.

just came across this comment online from Car Connection:

The 2011 Kia Optima will go on sale this fall. Though it hasn’t been officially stated, it’s sure to join the 2011 Kia Sorento at the company’s new West Point, Ga., assembly plant. The facility’s less than 100 miles from the Hyundai plant in Alabama that builds the Sonata and the Santa Fe crossover, and a nearby four-cylinder engine factory recently opened by the Korean conglomerate.

  18. Scott Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 2:15 am

Someone better tell KMMG that they are building the Optima. My friends that work there said they have been told they will be building the Sante Fe. They do have they saying at that plant, anything is subject to change.

  19. Greg. Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 2:43 am

Well, HS, if the Optima is going to have a V6 AND be manufactured in the USA it will be the 3.5L. That is the only V6 engine HKAG builds here, now.

  20. jtz Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 2:49 am

What if the Optima just got a very powerful I4 engine with the thrust of a V6, wouldn’t that be better?

  21. HyundaiSmoke Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 2:59 am

Youre right Greg, I do have those 3.8 Lambda Dreams though.
    -
Nah Optima will probably be built at Montgomery, like Santa Fe will be built at West Point. KIA building trucks and Hyundai Building cars is for the best, and it saves a lot on costs.

  22. Greg. Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 3:18 am

If there’s going to be a TF350 for the US market the Cadenza is pointless. Especially if the Optima is supposedly the “luxury leader”.

  23. JM Says:

2011 Sonata offers dual exaust on the SE model. This Kia looks fantastic though.

  24. Concept Says:

The rear looks ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. My goodness. The front I need to get used to. Kia did a FANTASTIC job. Cheers to Peter for a job well done.

Jtz I think the classic silver will be the choice for me….let’s pray this baby wins “car of the year!”…I’m proud of Kia I wanna cry literally. You know that feeling when your bad ass kid comes home with all A’s on his report card for the first time. And in the past he brought home C’s and D’s and you cry because you wanted him to do better? ……well that’s the feeling I have about KIA now. You just got all A’s from me baby!!! You ROCK! !!!GOD BLESS PETER!!!!

  26. HyundaiSmoke Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 8:40 am

Greg, KIA should Drop a Korean Spec 2.7 Mu and 3.8 Lambda in Cadenza so Optima will be freed up for 2.4 and 3.5.
    -
Or They did a TF270GDI and then a TF240. Then allowing 3.5 and 3.8 in Cadenza.

  27. HyundaiSmoke Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 8:45 am

Cadenza does need a GDI variant, those $6 gas days in 5-10 years from now will be coming.
    -
It will come since the Eco Dynamics versions of Cars hasnt been launched in the US yet.
    -
Eco Dynamics=Will cost more for extreme fuel economy.

  28. Martin Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

I’m in awe. This car is really fantastic. The driver oriented interior is just brilliant too; very Audi. They’ve done a bloody good job on this one.

  29. BernardP Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Since the new Sonata is only getting the 2.4 L Direct Injection 4-cyl engine, with a Turbo version coming later, it’s hard to believe that the Optima would get a V6. Hyundai “thinks” that Kia is their lower-tier brand. Of course, we know that they are gravely mistaken…

  30. himi Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

As far as I know, Kia will start building Santa FE’s at Georgia, while Hyundai will build new Optima alongside new Sonata. This mkes more sense than Santa Fe+ Sonata and SOrento+Optima. Just take a look at European production of new Hyundia-Kia’s crossovers. Kia builds both new Tucson (ix35) and new Sportage at the same factory, while Hyundai builds new Venga at its plant.

  31. Robert m. Lavelle Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 5:18 pm

NICE LOOKING CAR BUT ALITTLE LATE FOR ME AND MANY OTHERS WE GOT THE HYANDAI SONATA 2011 NOW AND DID NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR,KIA HAS TO MOVE AHEAD TO STAY AHEAD IF THEY WANT TO RUN WITH THE BIG BOYS……THE SONATA ONLY HAS A 4CYL. FOR AL 3 SONATA MODELS,SO WHY DO YOU NEED DUAL EXAUST IN THE SE CAR ???

  32. Manuel Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 6:28 pm

That is the Kia i have been waiting for…….Perfect. hope it brings the 2.4 GDI.

  33. jtz Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 7:46 pm

I said it before and I’m going to say it again. This is one hell of a design.

  34. BJD Says:

    March 17th, 2010 at 7:52 pm

This design is perfect. better than any jap D-class sedan and better even, then the recently launched sonata.
A lot of positive feedback all over the web regarding this car’s design.

  35. jtz Says:

    March 18th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

I don’t think bringing the next Optima on sale before the Cadenza is such a good idea anymore.

  36. conwelpic Says:

    March 18th, 2010 at 6:57 pm

in response to Himi’s comment of March 17th, saying that he thinks that the Santa Fe will be built on the same line at the Sorento at the new KIA plant because they build the Tucson and Sportage together in the Slovakian plant.
It seems reasonable upto a point, but I can’t say I agree and the reason why is that they are already producing Santa Fe’s in Montgomery, Alabama and they would have to stop production and move all the equipment for this model a hundred miles to the other plant and I don’t think they could afford to stop production of this model – its selling too well! The Montgomery plant will be running efficiently and I don’t think they would want to upset that. It seems like it would be a ligistical nightmare!

Also KIA Canada’s recent comment in their magazine saying that a new line would be added to their Sorento production in West Point and would be annouced within the next couple of months. Now if they were going to be building a competing vehicle, why would they bother to mention this, its no advantage to them. KIA needs all the capacity of the Georgia plant for their vehicles in order to meet demand.
I still think the new Optima/Magentis, Cadenza or Forte would make a lot more sense.

  41. Scott Says:

    March 19th, 2010 at 3:20 am

Conwelpic I don’t think it would a logistic problem. The two share alot of the same parts, and same suppliers.

  42. Greg. Says:

    March 19th, 2010 at 8:28 pm

Moving the Santa Fe is the worst thing they could do! They would have to stop production, and what about the workers? The Santa Fe line workers would have to be re-trained, Hyundai-specific and Kia- specific parts would be inter-mixed. Korean engineers are too smart to move the Santa Fe.

  43. Derrick G Says:

    March 19th, 2010 at 9:17 pm

    conwelpic,

From what I’ve read in the Korean press, it’s the next gen Santa Fe that would be built in West Point. So it wouldn’t interrupt production as the tooling wouldn’t need to be moved since it’d be new dies and all. Also, from what I read, the Optima would also be made at West Point with the Elantra moving to Montgomery to replace the Santa Fe. That should get the volumes about equalized, at least for now. Of course, that could change.

    Greg,

They’re sharing plants in Europe, so why wouldn’t they do it in the US?

All: HS’s link has a colon at the end of it you’ll need to remove to watch.

  44. Derrick G Says:

    March 19th, 2010 at 10:03 pm

    HS,

Great interview with John K there. Very interesting that they don’t share info with Kia on products. Guess now I can see how he could make statement about 4 in Sonata if he truly has no idea about Optima other than what they read on the web.

  45. Scott Says:

    March 20th, 2010 at 2:34 am

Well, my sources are friends who actually work there. They have been told the Santa Fe is coming this summer. I’m sure the Sonata and Sante Fe don’t share any parts and they roll down the same production line together back to back at times. I would think what Derrick read makes more sense. Building only two CUVS wouldn’t be a good thing if economy turn more south again.

I just saw the 2012 BMW 3 series. Let me tell you boy did they copy the KND-4 and Kue’s bumper. So when the next Sportage comes out, you guys do know people are going to think Kia copied the BMW 3 series. Your defense is bring up the Kia Kue and KND-4 concepts. And when Saab fans start saying the Optima looks like a Saab or Taurus say “So what that new Saab Crossover looks like the 2005 Kia Mesa and the 2010 Taurus headlights came from the 1999 Nissan Altima.” And if that doens’t work just bring up how Ford’s 500 copied the Audi A6′s greenhouse. Oh yeah I notice the facelifte Nissan Altima’s grille looks like the toyota Yaris. Imgagine that? Nissan never copied Toyota now all of a sudden they want to copy. Also, did anyone see the facelifted SCion XB. Gee it makes you want to take a car and push back in that ugly front bumper.

  47. jtz Says:

    March 21st, 2010 at 12:12 am

Kia’s designs are much more original compared to others now. For example, although the Optima does appear to have Audi Talights (at least I can admit Kia is copying compared to Toyota and Honda fans that like to believe they are 100% original), the Lancer, Tundra, Honda CR-Z and Chevy Impala look more like Audi than this does. Also did anyone see the facelifted ugly girly ride Toyota Rav-4′s face? Since when Toyota started using Chevy’s ugly signature grille? Did anyone see the New VW bettle? It’s funny how the Landrover’s A pillars got popular ever since Kia’s 2006 Orignal Kia Soul concept. Now all of a sudden, models like the Ford Flex, 2010 Nissan Armanda, the new ugly VW Bug wants in with the same A pillars. Mini cooper has had those Same A pillars (also the Dodge Neon’s headlights) for years but no one else thought to copy until the Kia Soul was unveiled at the 2006 NAIAS.

  48. jtz Says:

    March 21st, 2010 at 12:15 am

Doesn’t the new Ford Focus hatch remind you of a Subaru? I guess Ford really likes Subaru after all the Edge’s tail lights came from the Lagacy back in 2002… so

  49. jtz Says:

    March 21st, 2010 at 12:17 am

I’m am so glad the I flow and Kia Ray doens’t look like the Prius. Because if they did, Nissan and Honda fans would have bashed their designs and yet ignoring the face that the Insight and Leaf (with CR-V and volvoo tailights) look like triplets.

  50. Greg Says:

    March 21st, 2010 at 12:22 am

They weren’t already building the ix35 in Czech Republic when it started production in Slovakia.

  51. Derrious Says:

  52. jtz Says:

I know that any idiot can idenity the differance between the Camero and the Challenger but they look alike. Infact all those old designs in the 60′s and 70′s looked alike. Did anyone ever noticed that the Mazda Tribute’s headlights looks a lot like the Honda Ridgeline’s? Since when Mazda started copying Honda? I mean come on Mazda never seemed to be the one to copy. But I did see the Mazda 2 and it looks a lot like the Yaris. What an ugly little ride. I hope the next generation Rio goes out with a bang. Did anyone ever noticed BMW’s tailights are really Audi’s but they are upside down? Who would have known huh? Speaking of BMW, the new Lincoln signature grille ain’t orignal. All it is is BMW’s grille but a LOT Bigger that’s all. Did anyone see the facelifted Nissan Rouge can you say “Suzuki XL7?”

  53. jtz Says:

    March 21st, 2010 at 5:59 am

Derrious I can get cars from A to Z. Car designs is my Forte. For example, you remember Chyrsler’s M grille? Will I was disappointed when I found out that the Honda CR-Z got it’s grille from Also I noticed Honda seems to be copying Kia’s headlight designs. I remember when the Sportage was first unveiled and some people on other blogs said that Kia copied the Chevy Treavers’ tailghts. But how would they know that when the new Infiniti FX’s tailghts look more like the Chevy Treverse’s than Kia? I see the Chevy Treverse’s Audi Grille. Did anyone notice that the Infinti FX has Hyundai’s old HCD series face?

  54. jtz Says:

    March 21st, 2010 at 6:04 am

Actually I take that back about the 2006 Kia Soul concept. The 2005 Kia Mesa had the A pillars a year before the Soul. I wish they hurried with the Mesa cocnept though because it gave rivals time to copy the mesa. Anyone pay attention that side grilles didn’t get popular again until the 2006 Kia Soul was unveiled? I can name about 10 cars or more that now has side grilles. But…. I want. Maybe on another day.

  55. jtz Says:

    March 21st, 2010 at 6:12 am

Oh yeah, I shut up many blogs up about the Koreans are the only copycats. I got to join leftlane news next time a new Kia is unveiled so I can begin my novel and shut them up too. I already shut up autoblog. I’m thinking about going to edmunds too. I shut up burlappcars’ blog. Now they can’t say s**t about it’s only the Koreans copying. I also shut up the blog too. The last time somene came on here was the unveiling of the 2011 Kia Sorento. They wanted to say it looked like a saab. You know Saab with Volvoo and Cr-v’s tailghts?

  56. Bryan Says:

    March 21st, 2010 at 11:16 pm

jtz-I hate ta break it to ya but all automakers (yes, even Kia) copy other automakers. Worship Kia and you’ll only be disappointed in the end. Instead of freaking out think about what I just typed, too.
