Twice I have had the transmission appear to lock up while going down the road, once at 45 and once at 60 MPH. It gives the feeling of hitting a tree stump in the middle of the road. The event is accompanied by a loud bang inside the vehicle. The trans then goes into 4th gear by itself and will not shift higher until you stop the vehicle, remove the key and restart the motor.
