I notice the grille has vertical line pattern. wonder if that can improve its face. interior is nice but i preffer shifters without that puch-button mechanism. but cant be too bad this way. tail lamps are more visible here.

No Sportmatic, I see. I HATE the radio head design, it looks like the YN’s, and I hate that. It should be more like the new Sorento’s. It looks like the badge is centered in the grille, because they are covering it up! There could still be some hope for this car. I didn’t like the open-ness of the previous VG grilles. I wonder if they will continue to call it Amanti, or change the name like they did for the Spectra. Speaking of names, I heard that the Sorento will be called Mojave in the USA.
August 21st, 2009 at 9:45 pm
there was always a covering on the grille where there could possibly be a badge hidden but in other spyshots the bagde seemed more circular than elipse. think its fake badge, saddly.
jeez! cars these days! the buttons on the dash (and driver’s armrest and steering wheel) just keep increasing! as if drivers dont have enough to look after! I know it means more cool, competitive features but just saying. i guess co-drivers will be needed in future like in rally cars or passenger jets!
August 22nd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Great point Boris! I think it would significantly reduce vehicle collisions if there was a “co-driver” as you call it. Granted, they have to both be focused on the task at hand- driving, but it would help alleviate issues like when the driver starts to get drowsy (I recently heard, in Traffic School, that drowsy driving is as dangerous, and sometimes more dangerous, than driving under the influence) or their attention is distracted by something not in the line of sight of the traffic. Also agreed on the shifter- this thing looks like a clunky old Sorento shifter (I guess the 2003 automatic trans, when it didn’t have the Sportmatic). Which brings me to Greg’s point- no Sportmatic (that we can see). That makes me ponder if the transmission is just a Mule piece, and they’ll have a different one (the new 6 speed automatic?) in the production vehicle.

I do like the yellow turn signals in the rear. Now if we can convince KMA to keep those (and the side indicator on the fender!) in the USA. And for the record, I’m composing letters to all the manufacturers in the USA, urging them to switch to yellow, dedicated turn signals in the rear (dedicated meaning it’s just a turn signal/ hazard, not also a brake lamp like the 2006.5-2008 Optima). I’ve heard that’s a requirement in many countries, and think it’s a good idea. I don’t plan to ask President Obama to make it a law, I’d prefer to get everyone on my side by agreeing with me, not by forcing them with legislation. Ford seemed to hear my beseeching (beseechment?) with the MY 2010 Taurus…

If the new YF Sonata is anything to go by, this too will be an outstanding vehicle. The interior is restrained yet elegant and the overall impression I get from this interior is something along the lines of a Mercedes. The three simple dials are very similar to those used in the C class and the button layout is uncluttered.
I highly doubt it, but is that line above the gauge bin a stitch line for leather?

They mude debadge Kia.
August 23rd, 2009 at 1:03 am
typo fix.
They ‘must’ debadge Kia.
August 23rd, 2009 at 1:44 am
I actually think KIA is becoming Hyundai, and Hyundai is becoming Acura and MINI. Thats good for KIA as Hyundai has been an Aspirational upmarket make since 2000. Its time for KIA to become aspirational, and then join the upmarket in about 5-10 years.
-
The Amanti is KIAs XG 300/XG 350
-
The VG is KIAs Azera that had a baby with a Genesis.
-
They now need to give the Optima the Equippment thats in the Amanti
-
Then they need to Forte and Soul the Rio
August 23rd, 2009 at 1:50 am
KIA Needs to Hire Haleewood, and you guys need to make a Coupe thats nearly Corvette fast but is a whale of a coupe, built from a VG. Let Hyundai have the coupe more suited for Luxury, and KIA have the V8 soprts Coupe that the Genesis wasnt built to be.
August 23rd, 2009 at 5:48 am
did you see hyundai all new yf sonata?? it’s fantastic..
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:35 am
yea it sure is. huyndai’s cars are getting bigger price tags too.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:49 am
Boris it most will likely have a base MSRP of $20,000. The Sonata Touring Wagon (Portico) will start at $25K.
August 23rd, 2009 at 1:20 pm
The Optima has red turn signals at the back but I think it makes it sportier. The turn signals on the mirrors are yellow and can be seen from the back as well as the front. Somehow the passenger and driver can’t see them which is good. Seeing mirrors flash would annoy me. As for the VG this looks pretty good. Why is Hyundai showing way more Sonata than Kia is showing its VG. This car was on spy shots longer than the Sonata and Tusan and I know what they look like. At least tell us the name.
August 23rd, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I like it alot. It looks well thought out and of high quality. I like the Sorento steering wheel too and the gear shifter kind of reminds me of the ones Volkswagen use.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I’ll second that emotion on Kia needing to Forte and Soul the Rio! And right be quick about it, gents from SK! Get high mpg rigs to market soon, but, make them look sportier than Rio looks now, much sportier.
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:45 pm
I just so the facelifted Lexus ES. It looks horrible. I never thought I would say this but I’m starting to feel sorry for Toyota since 2007 their designs have been a little (what’s the word) pitiful. Nissan too (except the Nissan Z). I have to give Hyunda/Kia prop. Sure the Tuscan takes after the Murano but they creamed it looking better than both the Rouge and Murano. The way that compact CUV looks the next Equniox want have a chance. The Kee would make a great Nissan Z rival. Somone tell me Kia has plans to bring that joker into production. It can be the VG coupe or something. Kia needs another coupe and the VG platform would be perfect. Maybe the next Optima can do it too since both Kee and Optima share the same liter V6 engine.

We will never buy a car without red rear turn signals in the back. The Spectra’s were amber, and we hated them. It wrecks the flowing look of the rear end, and, frankly that’s one of the reasons I hate the new Taurus’s ass (not to mention it’s fat). How much safer could amber signals be anyway. When there is a glare from the sun, it is hard to see amber signals.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:04 am
we have a lot of sun here and never had problems seeing an Amber turn signal except for some merc-benz whose turn signals were almost white! wtf! But I dont h8 red turn lights. in fact i prefer them for looks. but Kia nor Hyundai offer those here. but many others do. so I know we dont have restrictions here. but nvr mind
August 24th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
They have 06.5-08 Optimas with amber turn signals? That would be awful!!
August 24th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
Thanks for your feed back guys. We seem to disagree on this, but at least we have both stated our points. The reason I think there should be “amber” turn signals in the rear (and front) is because of the distinguishability of the colors. If you see bright red you’d know it was the brake light, if you see “amber” you’d know it was the turn signal. (Yes, I know, flashing “red” could be the turn signal, but sometimes people tap their brake and you can’t see both sides of the vehicle- and see my next point).
-
Greg- your car is the main reason I have a huge beef with Kia. Not yours alone, but that model. The center brake light can not be replaced, and the turn signal/ brake lamp bulbs burn out frequently (I sold bulbs to 3 different customers with the 2006.5-2008 model on Saturday). When those bulbs burn out, you lose the turn signal AND the brake lamp on that side. One of the customers said they’ve almost been rear ended a few times, and they asked one of the people that almost hit them why, the person said they had no brake lights. Kia could have used the outer spot (the side marker light, it also has the side reflector in it) for the turn signal, or used the European lights (turn signal was below the tail/brake on the outer light set) which are pretty similar to what the 2009 models have. Even if you don’t want amber turn signals, do you understand my point of having a separate bulb as the turn signal? I’d actually prefer everyone go to LEDs on everything. There are a number of new vehicles with LEDs in them. You could have red tail lights/ brakes, and amber turn signals, and it would only be that color when illuminated. So your complaint about how it wrecks the flow or whatever, this wouldn’t be an issue. You will still have to have a clear spot for the reverse lights. Look at the Mercury Mountaineer- it’s tail light housings are completely chrome unless the lights are illuminated. I honestly won’t be surprised if Kia has to do some sort of recall or something on the tail lights of the Optimas. One of the bulbs one of the customers gave me (it was under the parts warranty- less than 1 year or 12k miles since previous replacement) had a melted filament. The technician that looked at it said the wiring is causing the brake lamps to get too much voltage or something, which is causing the filaments to get too hot over repeated times, which melts them, thus burning the brake light/ turn signal out. Had Kia used a different place for the turn signal, they’d at least only lose one part (the brake or tail light) and not both (I think the brake would be the one still burning out, since turn signals illuminate and then stop, off and on, the brake light stays lit the entire time).
August 24th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
PS: Greg- yes they had them in Europe and other countries. Look at the 2009 Optima, or the Forte, and imagine the lower part is clear. You can probably find pictures of the Cerato with the clear lens. I understand what you mean about it “wrecking” or whatever, the flow. I just prefer them different colors for safety. I’d also suggest having a separate place as the hazard lights (front and rear). I see that on some postal trucks and road work vehicles. That way you still have a turn signal if you have to drive with your hazards flashing. I’d make those orange (so red tail lamps and brake lights; yellow turn signals, white reverse lights, orange hazard flashers, and a pink or magenta rear fog light- so it’s slightly different than the brake light colors; all of these are available, and bright, with LEDs).

I hope this thing will look better than the Taurus. So far, after all the E segment sedans, the best looking ones to me is the Nissan Maxima, Ford Taurus and Kia VG (at least what I”m allowed to see along with the concept). If Kia brings the KND’5′s headlights into production, the VG would be my top pick in best looking in it’s class. Those headlights. It’s just somthing about those stylish headlights most people don’t understand about them. The design direction is simular to that of Audi. The lights light up outlining the headlights. The ES’s don’t. Unlike the ES, the VG is muscular and has sidemoldings. Unlike the ES, the VG has a more stylish grille. Where as the ES’s grille looks too big and out of place. Unlike the ES, the VG’s headlights isn’t just a lights given from the Sorento and unchanged them and placed them on the sedan. Like Lexus did given from RX to the ES. Every Kia has the same face but has diffrent characteristics. I really really like that. Look at the Lexus RX’s headlights and ES’s headlights. Word of advice to Lexus. DON’T CHANGE THE LEXUS IS it’s the best looking sedan you guys have.
August 25th, 2009 at 1:59 am
I can’t wait to see this grille finalized. Gee I wish I knew the name.
August 25th, 2009 at 2:11 am
RE: Red turn signals. The purpose of the rear turn signal is to let others know you’re turning, not primarily to look stylish. Since studies have found that in fact amber rear signals are safer, in the US the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently looking at requiring them, which would pretty much mean no more red rear signals anywhere. So far, comments to NHTSA have been overwhelmingly in favor of requiring amber rear signals.
August 25th, 2009 at 6:52 am
I am with Jason’s idea of having LED and clear lens. this way, the lights have a uniform chrome (or black bezel) colour and look stylish cuz LEDs dont need the entire light housing and lens to be red or orange.
August 25th, 2009 at 7:19 am
After 30k miles, we have not replaced a single bulb on the Optima. We’d better not have to. If so, we will have the dealership do it. FREE OF CHARGE. We have a warranty, and we take full advantage of it.
August 25th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Greg, light bulbs are consumables (just as windscreen wipers, brake pads, tires, etc…) and are normally not covered by any warranty, unless proven that it’s really fawlty. Of course for the cost price of a bulb, I would not want any hasle either and replace it free of charge….
August 25th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
LEDs will last a lot longer. Virtually a lifetime!
August 25th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Bornloser is correct Greg. Here in the USA your bulbs are under the 12 month, 12k miles warranty, just like the other things he listed, AND your clutch if you have a manual transmission. So if you hit 47k miles and your clutch goes bad, you have to pay for it. As for your bulbs, you’re the only person I’m aware of that hasn’t replaced any bulbs. The benefit of the Kia warranty is that you get a 12 month/ 12k mile warranty on parts when you purchase them, so Kia has been paying for many of those bulbs being replaced by our customers. It’s just the frustration the people go through that they go out every few months.

While I like that the NHTSA is on my side, I’d prefer people (rather, the manufacturers) come to agree and do it on their own. Think of the seat belt law, everyone would rather do that on their own, than have Uncle Sam say “you have to do this!” or something. I’d also recommend we have Daytime Running Lights as Canada does, though again as all companies come to do it on their own, NOT because Uncle Sam says the manufacturers have to. And it would be an easy solution, since the Canadian models are almost the exact same as the US ones (in Kias it’s just a relay in the engine compartment fuse box). My caveat is that the DRLs NOT be the high beams, like Chrysler has been doing lately, with full output lights, rather than a dimmed beam like others have done for years. The glare hurts my eyes in the day time!
August 26th, 2009 at 1:44 am
Really? I’m the only one you know who hasn’t replaced a bulb? Did you know we haven’t replaced a fuse, either? Speaking of fuses, isn’t there a fuse in the fuse box labeled “DRL Off”, and if you pull that fuse out, you get the DRLs?
August 26th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Greg- I don’t know of anyone replacing fuses. But yes, you are the only person with a 2006.5 style Optima that hasn’t replace one of the turn signal/ brake lamp bulbs. We get them frequently, and I’m only here 3 days a week (open 6 days a week). The DRL relay is something you have to plug in, not remove. We can not get them in the USA, but they have them in Canada. I’m not sure the cost though, plus getting US Dollars converted to Canadian Dollars, etc. But it is possible.

Where are the pics of the interior???
Someone please show me where I can see one.
There is none on this page =S
I found one after looking on google but the front fascia of the interior (the dashboard) is mostly covered up =(
