Kia Soul crossover puzzle!

Written by himi on Friday, September 21st, 2007 in Concept Cars, Kia SOUL.

soul-blog.jpg

We are slowly puting together the pieces of Soul puzzle. Every once in a while, we get informations from people who know development secrets Kia is hiding from us.

It was reported before, that the mini crossover is going to be offered with the range of three different engine displacements. Depending on market, there will be 2.0 liter and 1.6 liter, 4 cylinder gasoline and diesel engines offered. While we still don’t know details on either powerplant, we found out what the actual crossover size is.

It will be the smallest crossover vehicle on the market. With the size of only 4,1 meter, this is barley any larger than Kia’s Rio hatchback.

The Soul’s rolling stock will be comprised of 15″, 16″ and 17″ wheels on all corners or top of the line 18″ inchers, making the vehicle stance more musclebound.

Exterior dimensions: Length: 4.105mm , width: 1.785mm , height: 1,610mm, weight: 1,210kg

This is an interesting article on Kia’s eco friendliness, written by Kyehwan Roh, assistant manager at Kia’s enviromental managment team:

Did you know that Kia has 20 years of history developing eco friendly autos?  Kia was Korea’s first automobile manufacturer to develop and mass market electric vehicles with the introduction of the Besta in 1986.

Over the years, Kia has been a pioneer in Korea of lead cell electric, electric hybrid and 2nd generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. And following on from our 1st generation hydrogen fuel cell electric Sportage, which is currently undergoing long-term testing in the USA as part of a U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored validation program, we recently displayed our 2nd generation fuel cell electric vehicle platform at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Once again, Kia is teasing us with the images of their latest SUV. After seeing interior and exterior teaser shots last month, Kia released another one today. And this is the first time they are leting us see the entire exterior design.

Many spy pictures and reports about Kia’s 7-seat SUV were already posted here, including the one about Kia trademarking Mojave name. So we nearly know what the final design will look like. But after seeing the higher resolution image, where you see some design details, we can say once again; “Good job Kia, it looks beautifull!”

After almost three years of development, under the code name HM, Kia is ready to release the SUV. HM is going to production before the end of this year and will be on sale in it’s home Korean market at the beginning of 2008. At that time it will also make it’s official world debut!

So, watch out you don’t miss the upcoming 2008 North American International Auto Show where Kia (HM, Mesa, Mojave) debuts!

Written by himi on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 in R&D at Kia.

kia-fcev.jpg

When this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show kicked off in the German city last week, it was definitely the “clean cars” or eco-friendly vehicles, that stole the limelight of the world’s largest automobile feast.

Global carmakers are in fierce competition to develop eco-friendly cars including hybrid vehicles and fuel cell cars amid rising environmental concerns. And in South Korea, Hyundai Motor is leading the van of the so-called environmental management.

In the automobile show attended by some 4,000 exhibitors, Hyundai Motor unveiled its third-generation hydrogen concept car “i-Blue” to join the latest global trend spearheaded by the world’s top players such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. (more…)

Comparison Test: 1984 Ferrari 308 GTSi vs. 2007 Kia Sedona EX!

“Who’s got it better, Magnum or Mom?

Comparing a minivan to a Ferrari is surely absurd to some. Who cares? Those people never got girls in high school. Their idea of kooky, crazy fun is a red Prius. Tell them to have another soy milk latte and stick to reading www.lactoseintolerant.org, the Web site for the lactose-intolerant.

There’s a real question to be answered here: How far has the automobile progressed in 23 years? Can a new minivan outrun a two-decade-old supercar?

Sure it’s stupid, but that’s the point…”

I have never heard of such a strange comparison, but let’s face it, this is an interesting article. So, if you are curious which car won the apples to oranges comparisson test, just follow the link:

Written by himi on Friday, September 14th, 2007 in Kia Vehicles.

2008 Picanto

Kia Motors Corp. said Tuesday it will sell the facelift version of the Morning compact car in Europe by the end of this year, as part of its efforts to capture a bigger share of the European auto market.

Lee Hyung-geun, vice president of Kia’s European headquarters, made the remark at a press conference in Frankfurt before the opening of the International Auto Show, which starts with two days of press previews, during the day.

Lee reiterated that Kia aims to grab 2.7 per cent of the European auto market by 2010 by selling 600,000 vehicles that year.

Kia pursues unique, emotional design!

Written by himi on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 in Concept Cars.

kia-kue.jpg

Small cars with interesting designs such as the Volkswagen Beetle or the Audi TT may have a Korean rival in about a year as Kia Motors Corp. ambitiously brainstorms for creativity. A compact car with character or emotional design is one of the many projects Kia is currently working on, according to the company’s chief officer Peter Schreyer.

“When you buy a car, it’s more of an emotional decision — of course you consider the price and performance, but first you have to see the car and like it,” Schreyer said in an interview with The Korea Herald.

“It is true that Korea is a prestige-oriented market and people tend to think ‘the bigger a car, the better,’ but I think the younger generation, who are connected to the internet and global fashion, music or games, will have different expectations and we should deal with that.”

Schreyer, who left Volkswagen AG to join Kia a year ago, agreed with the reporter that the landscape of cars in Korea is very monochromatic.

“You see a lot of silver, white and dark grey cars on the roads, and I guess they all want to be on the safe side in terms of both colors and design,” he said. “This is largely because Korea has been a very closed market, almost like an island.”

Eco_cee’d indicating green Kia future!

KIA ECO_CEE’D; THE “GREEN PERFORMANCE” CONCEPT CAR

Kia is staging the World Premiere of a new “green-performance” concept car at Frankfurt. Called “eco_cee’d, the new concept is a development of the Kia pro_cee’d hatchback and aims to achieve better fuel consumption, with fewer emissions – while still delivering a lively, spirited drive.

Based on a pro_cee’d fitted with a lively yet frugal Euro-5 compliant, 115 ps, 1.6-litre diesel engine, the new eco_cee’d concept has been designed to hugely enhance the “®green” potential of the standard model. A combination of small but significant modifications to the base vehicle result in much improved fuel consumption (just 3.9 litres/100km) and reduced CO2 emissions (just 104 g/km).

The impressive performance, fuel economy and emissions figures of the eco-cee’d are largely the result of improved aerodynamics which bring the drag coefficient down to just Cd 0.29. To maximise the value of the aerodynamic and powertrain improvements, eco_cee’d is fitted with Kia’s new Idle Stop&Go and Regenerative Braking systems.

As a “green-performance” concept car the eco-cee’d demonstrates a part of Kia’s vision for the way ahead with future engine developments for next-generation environmentally friendly and fuel efficient production models – without losing sight of customer expectations for cars with a sporty design and fun-to-drive performance.

Kia Pro_cee’d unveiled!

Written by himi on Wednesday, September 12th, 2007 in General News, Kia Vehicles.

Pro_cee’d

The World Premiere of the new Kia pro_cee’d three-door hatchback, at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in Germany 11 September in production form, marks the latest expansion of the popular Kia cee’d family.

“The new Kia pro_cee’d offers consumers sensationally stylish looks with a truly sporty feel to the driving experience, while also retaining most of the attributes of the popular cee’d five-door hatchback – including excellent practicality and versatility, enthuses Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President Kia Motors Europe.

“With performance, ride and handling that is even more responsive than the five-door, the pro_cee’d will be available with the same wide choice of engines and specifications as its sister car. I think pro_cee’d is truly a great looking car and we know for certain that it will delight existing Kia customers and attract numerous European consumers who find three-door cars particularly attractive and who have not yet considered our brand.”

Distinctive styling with a cee’d family theme

Thanks to its early conception in the cee’d family creative process, the pro_cee’d has ‘stand-alone’ good looks despite a large degree of commonality with other cee’d models, beneath the exterior skin.

“It is a completely resolved design, with only the bonnet and front wings carried over from the five-door, and features unique exterior panels to create its own distinctive style,” comments Gregory Guillaume, Kia Motors Europe Chief Designer. “We wanted to make pro_cee’d as ‘sporty’ as a cee’d could possibly be, while still remaining a member of our cee’d family.”

Because the Kia cee’d family of three models was conceived simultaneously, the new pro_cee’d three-door hatchback has the same in-depth engineering integrity as the five-door hatchback and the wagon. A total of 15 mm longer than the five-door, the pro_cee’d has longer overhangs – by 10 mm at the front and 5 mm at the rear.

Although the pro_cee’d roofline is 30 mm lower than its hatchback sibling, the 2650 mm wheelbase is retained, so the cabin has most of the cee’d’s proven practicality and versatility, with generous legroom and shoulder room. The new roofline and sloping C-pillar design bring about a small reduction in headroom – down 30 mm in front and 40 mm in the rear, but two 1.70-metre adults can sit comfortably in the rear.

blog2.jpg

Luggage capacity is also generous for this type of vehicle, totaling 340 litres – loaded up to the bottom of the rear windows and including 55 litres of storage in moulded trays beneath the floor, fitted as standard – just like the hatchback and the Sporty Wagon. The total capacity with the rear seats folded is class-competitive and only slightly down on the five-door cee’d hatchback.

Three models introduce the ‘qualitative revolution’

The launch of the Kia cee’d family (five-door hatchback, five-door Sporty Wagon and three-door pro_cee’d) marks a major turning point in Kia’s history. The bringing of this trio to the marketplace is the start of a new era. They are the first-ever Kia cars designed and manufactured in Europe and are already introducing a qualitative revolution for the brand.

The highest standards of engineering and the European-style aesthetics have been applied to every aspect of the cee’d creative process. Such is the quality and durability of cars manufactured at the new purpose-built Kia factory at Zilina in Slovakia, which every cee’d sold in Europe is backed by a 7-Year/150,000 km warranty.

Kia’s all new hydrogen platform makes European debut!

Written by himi on Tuesday, September 11th, 2007 in R&D at Kia.

hydrogen-platform.jpg

Besides the low CO2 output Eco_cee’d concept, Kia Motors Corporation is staging another European Premiere! They are exhibiting their latest Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) platform at Frankfurt for the first time!

The hydrogen-fuelled, electrically-driven FCEV platform represents the next step forwards in Kia’s continuing commitment to develop cleaner, greener production vehicles for the future.

The all-new 4.6-metre long platform is designed to fit beneath an SUV-style vehicle. Propelled by three electric motors, powered by a 100 kW Fuel Cell and fuelled by twin 76-litre tanks storing hydrogen at 700 bar, the 4×4 FCEV promises real-world usable performance and has the ability to start in extremely cold temperatures (down to – 30C).

Kia’s computer simulations indicate that clothed in a Sorento-type body, the new FCEV could accelerate to 100 kph in just 10 seconds, reach a top speed of 170 kph and achieve a 600 km range – all with zero emissions. While accomplishing good progress in terms of greener motoring, the new FCEV is very much a ‘real world’ solution to daily transport challenges – offering lively performance to match its commendable emissions and fuel consumption.
