First drive: Kia Excee’d concept car!

Written by himi on Sunday, July 15th, 2007 in Concept Cars.

Autoexpress magazine got a great opportunity from Kia. Their test driver had a chance to drive Kia’s latest and most attractive concept car ever built by this Korean company. There was nothing but praise coming from car magazines and visitors of Kia’s place about this concept car.

It looks great, but how does it drive? Find out here…

Kia’s Excee’d is a good looking car with an equally attractive seven-year warranty scheme and competitive pricing! If you want the proof that Kia is not merely knocking on the door of credibility, here it is.

This new Excee’d is a stunning convertible version of the impressive Cee’d family hatchback, which shows that the ambitious Korean car maker has both feet planted firmly on the threshold of international success.More than that, the Excee’d is the first piece of Kia work from Audi TT designer Peter Schreyer, who joined the firm late last year.

Quick to realise that the marque badly needs a ‘halo car’ if it is to become more than a maker of solid budget motors, the Excee’d is his answer to models such as Ford’s Focus Coupé Cabriolet.

Much more than simply a Cee’d without a roof, the Excee’d uses the same chassis as the three-door Procee’d, which arrives later this year. Just like the Procee’d, the Excee’d has short overhangs which give it a purposeful stance. The nose takes the three-door’s design a step further, with chrome intakes and a grille which is more striking than the one on the five-door Cee’d.

Kia has plumped for a folding soft-top rather than following the trend for a metal lid. According to Schreyer, this is not simply for cost and design reasons, but also because he feels that a soft-top is more likely to appeal to a driver’s emotions. Certainly, during his time working at Audi – where he presided over the styling of the A4 Cabriolet as well as the classic TT Roadster – the German designer refused to employ a folding metal roof, which he has admitted in the past he’s not keen on.

And when you see the Excee’d up close in the metal, it’s easy to see that Schreyer has a valid point. As well as providing a generous dose of practicality (because fabric roofs take up less space than metal ones), the car looks great, too. It certainly doesn’t have the ungainly rear end that invariably blights rivals with folding hard-tops.

Nor does it have such a long rear overhang, or the heavy bootlid that tin-topped cabrios seem to require. However, from certain angles, its flanks do appear a touch slab-sided. Not even the clever detailing – such as the chrome strip inset at the bottom of the doors and the flares above the wheelarches – can quite manage to obscure this.

The Excee’d may not bring anything new to the cabriolet sector, but it certainly seems a viable rival to models such as the Vauxhall Astra TwinTop. The adoption of a folding soft-top frees up boot space and means that the rear seats are big enough for an adult – just.

The glamorous instrument dials tell us what buyers of the forthcoming Procee’d can look forward to, although it seems unlikely that the chocolate brown leather dashboard and details, plus the white leather seats, will be on the options list.

Under the Excee’d's bonnet, the company has slotted in its 2.0-litre petrol engine. Available in other markets, we have yet to see this powerplant make its debut on British shores. Accelerating from standstill, the unit provides plenty of urge, and this prototype combined that witha rorty exhaust note.

Our test run was restricted to a 40mph maximum speed, but out on the road, the driver’s seat is a remarkably calm place to be with the roof down. There was little buffeting, even with the side windows lowered, which is encouraging for driving around town. And although the engineers haven’t started to work on the handling yet, it seems fair to assume that the Excee’d will be a cabriolet which is aimed more at posers than at performance car fans.

Finally, Kia Soul spy shots!

Kia Soul spy shotKia Soul spy shot

Usually we get spy pictures at least one and a half year ahead of vehicle debut. But this time it was a long wait to see first spy pictures of new Kia Soul (It is expected to debut next year).

Not many informations about Soul are avaliable right now. But we know that this is the Kia’s answer to Scion line up. This vehicle will go head to head with Scion latest arrival, Xb car when it comes to the market next year.

It was first introduced in 2005 at New York auto show and got good response from visitors. Recent Scion sales success forced Kia to develope their own youth oriented vehicle.  And here it is, a bit toned down, with smaller size wheels, but otherwise very modern design. One thing we noticed first, it lost suicide doors.

It will be sold in US and Europe, that’s why we expect more than just one engine choice. Concept car showed few years ago had a 2,0 litre petrol engine mated to a five speed automatic transmission. In Europe, a modern comon rail diesel engine will be avaliable too!

Kia Cee’d review!

Kia Cee'd

Let’s get the name out of the way first. Yes, the name, cee’d is certainly unusual and there are many theories behind it but it really is quite simple.

The cee’d is Kia’s first European designed and built car. The company says that it’s a European car for European people and it won’t be on sale in other parts of the world. To mark the occasion, Kia took the initials of the European Economic Community, EEC or CEE in some places and added ED for European Design. Sensibly realising that CEEED was an ‘E’ too far, they replaced one of them with an apostrophe, thus giving us cee’d and always in lower case.

The intention is to cover most of the bases in the C-segment but one word that Kia won’t use is recede, as the company hopes that this car will increase its market share, with expected sales of 100,000 units…

Hyundai-Kia Wins 5% Market Share in US!

Written by himi on Thursday, July 5th, 2007 in Kia sales.

Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors passed through the 5 percent barrier in terms of market share in the United States in June, for the first time since 1986 when Hyundai Motor began exporting cars to the U.S.

Hyundai Motor sold 49,368 vehicles in the United States last month, while Kia Motors sold 26,288. The combined sales of 75,656 accounted for 5.2 percent of the total sales in the country.

“Sales in the U.S. last month rose some 11 percent from a year ago,” a Hyundai Motor spokesman said. “We anticipate the high sales will help the company meet its target of selling 550,000 cars throughout the year in the U.S., the world’s largest auto market.” And Kia expects over 300,000 cars to be sold this year.

Hyundai Motor’s Santa Fe crossover sport utility vehicle (SUV) and the Sonata sedan were the main contributors to the strong sales.  Kia’s star in June was a new Rondo with sales skyrocketing to more than 4000 units in US market! During the same period, sales of General Motors automobiles plunged 21 percent, while Ford saw its sales drop more than 8 percent.

Findings by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showed that Hyundai Motor’s Santa Fe and Kia Motors’ Sorento were among the best performing SUVs in crash simulation tests.

Good performances also affected the stock prices of the automakers. Hyundai Motor climbed 2.8 percent after the company said its U.S. vehicle sales in June jumped 11 percent year-on-year. Kia Motors also edged up 2.7 percent despite wage disputes between labor and management.

Kia Ceed popular in Romania!

Written by himi on Wednesday, July 4th, 2007 in General News.

Romanian Kia Rom Auto, the authorised importer of South Korean Kia Motors vehicles, sold 562 cars of the Kia Cee’d model in the first 50 days after its official launch in Romania, exceeding by far its full-2007 expectations, company president Dan Chitaru said on June 22, 2007.

The model was officially launched in Romania on April 26, 2007, when Kia Rom Auto set a sales target of 400 units for 2007. In view of the soaring sales so far, the company raised its 2007 sales projection for the model to 1,500 cars.

Due to the strong demand, in May 2007 Kia Rom Auto updated its order with Kia Motors factory in the Slovak city of Zilina, which will shorten delivery time to clients from July, Chitaru said.

The importer expects orders to jump significantly from July owing to the introduction of new engine variations of Kia Cee’d, including a 1.6l diesel one of 115 hp, 1.6l petrol engine of 122 hp, 2.0l petrol engine of 143 hp, and a 2.0l diesel one with 140 hp, Chitaru added.
