Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group ranks fifth in global auto sales

With global sales of 3,961,629 units in 2007 the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group has emerged as the world’s fifth largest automaker moving up from sixth place in 2006, according to Automotive News’ 2008 Global Data Book published yesterday.

“We have been stressing the value of our products over the last few years and our efforts have not gone unnoticed by the public or the industry, neither quantitatively or qualitatively.

Kia will continue to focus on producing a new generation of quality vehicles with distinctive design for those who are young-at-heart to keep the momentum of our brand growing. As a top global automaker, we are set to move in new directions with continuous improvements in quality, design, eco-friendliness and brand innovation for years to come.”

The Group has seen remarkable growth since its foundation. It ranked as the world’s eleventh largest automaker in 1999, the year Hyundai-Kia Chairman Mong-Koo Chung took over the helm as CEO.

Since then, it has moved steadily up the rankings ladder as under Chairman Chung’s leadership the Group accelerated the push to globalize operations by building new manufacturing plants in the United States, China, India, Slovakia, Czech, Russia and Brazil.

Counting the export sales of 185,114 complete knock-down kits which are assembled by overseas partners, the Group’s 2007 global sales reached 4,146,743 units. Automotive News’ methodology excludes CKD sales. [Source: Theautochannel]

  1. WPOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! GOOOO KIA!!! congrats HKAG! keep bringing the cars. Its gonna take a LOT of cars to beat Ford! HKAG has an advantage to beat ford cuz Ford’s sales are just going down month by month [same with GM.]

  2. See, if Kias and Hyundais are as bad as all those idiot car snobs say they, kia and hyundai wouldn’t be that high up in sales figures.

    WELL DONE KIA-HYUNDAI!

  3. Do you think it’s possible for Hyundai-Kia to become the No. 3 by 2015? They have increased it’s sales by more than one million cars since 99 when they were 11th largest automaker. If they add another million they will come pretty close to Ford.

  4. maybe it possible cuz ford’s sales are going down. every month

  5. lets see. top seller is spectra. but everyday styling might turn away a few customers. with the new one, those few will come back to buy spectra. I mean forte.
then, the borrego. small market for it. but its still attracting new customers.
new optima. better styling; more customers
picanto looks awesome and rising fuel prices. more picanto buyers.
sportage: sales might go down instead of up cuz of fuel economy. Kia has to work on that cuz ppl want small SUVs to save fuel. same for sorento here. sales will drop. but thats becuz its mid-sized but not very family friendly [only 5 seats]
    .
but here’s a road hump. Ford is planning on introducing small fuel sipping cars and adding bigger transmissions to the smaller cars for more fuel efficiency.
    .
then again, Everyone knows who offers great warranties and prices. thats it: its HKAG.
    .
conclusion: yes himi, what u say is quiet possible 😀

  6. Congratulations to Hyundai-Kia for finally achieving its goal. With the upcoming cars, the escalating trend will only continue. That said, I have an issue with the content posted on your website, himi. I’ve been a daily reader ever since Kia-World’s conception (the days when it was http://kiaworld.blog.com). While your website has informed me greatly, I have come to notice that all these articles were not written by you. That crosses the line as it is plagiarism, a practice that is highly intolerable on the Internet. I’ll look to other websites until you learn to write the articles yourself.

  7. Kia would get many more sales in USA if they introduced Picanto. Even though I am 100% against hybrids, if Kia introduced hybrid Sportage/Sorento/Borrego, Kia would sell them so that they would get Spectra (Forte) fuel efficiency, in a market that has potential buyers. Those buyers are just afraid of gas prices! Redesign some models, bring out hybrids, bring picanto, and Kia will overtake ford in under 2 years.

  8. Good points, I agree with you, Greg. I can’t believe VW is #3 in the world in sales. I don’t even read up on VW products, can’t stand them!

  9. Just a note on hybrids, Toyota is finding out the batteries are only last 5 yrs and cost about 5000-7000 to replace. Also the batteries cant be recycled, and are very dangerous as they start to break down. I say stick with gas find a way to make it burn cleaner, and more efficiently. Otherwise the next problem will be where to put the piles and piles of batteries, and we dont need more junk yards.

  10. Woodward, There are lots of scientists developing batteries that can used long term in autos and one which can be recycleable or dont harm the environment. eg: virus battery. There is also lots of research going on to find alternative clean fuels and ways to produce them without damaging the environment.
