Car of the Year 2008 in Romania is…Kia Cee’d

Kia Cee’d was selected Thursday as “Car of the Year 2008” in Romania, in a competition organised by the Romanian Union of Auto Journalists and Publishers (UZEAR), Rompres reports.

Finalists of the 2008 “Car of the Year” competition were Fiat 500, Fiat Bravo, Ford Mondeo, Hyundai i30, Kia Cee’d, Mazda2, Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 308.

The eight finalists were selected in mid-November, when the first stage of the competition concluded.

A jury made up of journalists cast online votes for their favourite models out of a total 31 eligible automobiles, selected by UZEAR out of the new models to be launched this year or next year in the domestic market.

Just like in the European Car of the Year competition, each member of the 18-journalist jury had 25 points to distribute to max five models, with the maximum score not to exceed 10 points for one model.

In 2007, the Car of the Year in Romania was the Opel Corsa.

The engine range of Cee’d is pretty standard fare – 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre four cylinder petrol versions plus, er, 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre turbodiesels. The 1.6 litre petrol is predicted to be the best seller, and it’s not at all bad. Yes, it gets a bit vocal when pressed, and it’s still a bit loud under motorway cruising. But in town it’s smooth and refined with plenty of mid-range torque.

The Cee’d specs are : engine – 1591cc 16 valve four-cylinder petrol, power-120 bhp at 6200rpm, torque- 113 lb/ft at 5200rpm, Performance- 0-62 mph 10.8 seconds, 119 mph top speed, Fuel economy – 44.1mpg combined, CO2 emissions – 152 g/km.

  1. WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!! 😀 . This is awsome! this is what KIA deserves. Yeah! GO KIA 😀 😀 😉

  2. That is Wonderful! There are too many “Kia-haters” in the U.S. because Kia made poor quality vehicles in the U.S. when they initially launched, and that gave them a bad name from the beginning. Now that they are making the best products in the world, people don’t give Kia the time of day. People in the U.S. are awful and stuck in their ways. I want to move to Europe or Asia. People are more open there, and aren’t constantly dreaming of having a Ferrari and putting down other cars. People in the U.S do that constantly. How do you compare Kia to Ferrari? Studies show that the U.S. has the most un-intelligent people on the face of the erth…earh…EARTH. Those people will never get a Ferrari anyway……

  3. DONT WORRY ABOUT THEM. there are a fair amount of Kia lovers in this world already. any way whats with the ferrari? I wish more had been told about the mohave in the mag

  4. BTW, whats The Kia Sidewinder all about? IS it a concept? WAS it a concept? WILL IT BE a concept?

  5. I’ve got my Sportage photos ready. I hope we can upload pix directtly on the site. My Sportage’s nick named K-port

  6. Whoo-hooweee! That is great news on the Kia C’eed trophy. That one in the picture is one I would entertain looking at,
though, the new Spectra is more in line with what I could actually get, because I’m a US’er.

Yeah, attitudes about Kia in the U.S. are improving, but should be much better. Americans are slow to forget what
happened 10 years ago or even 7 years ago. Thing is, Kia quality started really improving about 2002 or so. When they were swallowed up by
Hyundai, eh? A Canadian eh for y’all even though I’m not in Canada nor am I a Canadian person! Canadians seem
more loving of Kia’s than Americans…Canadians like small cars better, too.

  7. Yeah, for some reason people in the US like MASSIVE AIRCRAFT CARRIER SIZE SUV’s! That is a little exaggeration, but you get my point.

  8. Just wanted to clarify that no I didn’t type that post above like that just to be different! It’s an auto-formatting thing that didn’t format right.
